Barnum Museum Classwork

For G and F block absences on 1/30 – Attached is a copy of the writing prompts from today’s class. You are only required to complete one of the assignments; if you were absent, choose any section. Then, complete the two questions for that section. Be sure to explain you answers clearly, and look back to the packet if you need to clarify details.

Millhauser – “The Barnum Museum” prompts

Steven Millhauser – “The Barnum Museum”

For Monday, (both F and G block), make sure you have finished Millhauser’s short story “The Barnum Museum.” Be ready to share opinions and do some initial writing about this piece.

G Block only:

1) Consider our class discussions about imagination vs. reality. Choose and record 2 quotes from Millhauser’s story that you believe provide some commentary on these ideas.

2) Come up with 2 (or more) questions about the story. They can be clarification questions – or, if you feel you understand the text, interpretive questions about which you’d be interested to hear others’ opinions.

Be prepared to share these as fodder for discussion.

Enjoy (both the weekend & the story)!

Quote Reflection – Due Thurs. Jan 26

The following quotes are on the half-sheet in front of your folders:

“Deeper meaning resides in the fairy tales told to me in my childhood than in the truth that is taught by life.” (Friedrich Schiller, 1759-1805)

“Everything you can imagine is real.” (Pablo Picasso, 1881-1973)

1) Choose one of the above quotes for reflection.

2) Decide whether you agree or disagree with it, and explain why. Use examples from your own experiences – especially from stories  / literature / art – to explain why you have this point of view.

Hope everyone is enjoying the class so far!
